Only Child

(Before we get started, the answer to your question is: "No. I don't plan on having any more children". ) ;-)

My child insists on playing (almost daily) with our neighbor's kids. She loves playing with the 5 yr old boy, but his 7 yr old sister is going through her "bossy" phase. After almost every playtime, my dd comes home frustrated, angry or in tears.

During a recent conversation with the mother and grandmother of these two, we were all wondering aloud why they insist on playing with each other. At least twice it was pointed out to me that Gwyni's issue is that she's an only child. Needless to say, I was a little pissed.

Why do people assume that a child without siblings is automatically spoiled? DD is generous, compassionate, and has a very strong belief that all things should be done fairly. Does she get everything she needs?? Yes. Does she get anything she wants?? NO!

Only children are supposed to be solitary and uncompetitive because they are often alone. WRONG, again. DD has bff's her own age, older friends, and there are several adults that she likes to chat with. And she is pretty competitive...in almost everything. ("Balance, dear. Balance.")

Apparently, ancient and unscientific research (we're talking 1890's) is the basis for most of the "only child" stereotypes. I found this interesting article on NewForParents.org. Mowing Down Only Child Myths It's a short read that debunks many of the only child stereotypes.

The fact is, your family size is your business. Ironically, my friend has a large, happy family. 6 well-adjusted children. Funny how people feel free to criticize them, as well. I have too few. She has too many. *sigh*

Well adjusted kids are the result of attentive, responsible parenting. No matter the number of siblings (or lack of siblings).

New Post

Our family is looking forward to summer. School has been torture for all of us these last few months. We're looking for something fun that will help my dd with her math. Workbooks are out. But I may have found something that will work. More soon.

Hmmmm...what to do with this blog??

Wow. Life is funny. It's been so long since I posted here. And many things have changed. I like my story. But it never really went anywhere. Other things began to monopolize my time - good things - and now I'm so far away from that original goal that I'm not sure what to do with this page.

Many changes are coming.

Stay tuned.
